Tasting Tips
Owing to the situation of the vineyard, Vosne Romanee premier cru "Les Petits Monts" is a wine of great complexity. With a discreet acidity and fine tannins, this wine is characterised by perfumes suggestive of ripe fruits and essence of flowers. Scents of woodland undergrowth and humus mingle with those of cherries in brandy and peony, later tending towards perfumes of leather and animals. Sometimes smoky, in the mouth it is ample, pure and velvety. Its finesse and elegance make it a very harmonious wine. VOSNE ROMANEE "LES PETITS MONTS". Premier Cru. Appellation d'origine controlee. Vineyard Manager: Vincent Mongeard. Total area of vineyard: 30ha. Average annual production: 170000 bottles. Total area under this appellation: 2ha 02a 50ca. Area under production at the Domaine: 30a 21ca. Production at the Domaine in 2006: 9hl 99. Grape varieties: Pinot Noir 100%. Average age of vines: 15 to 50 years. Harvesting by hand: exclusively. Destalking: 100%. Maturing: 35% new oak barrels. The 2008 vintage made light of the vagaries of the nature: the good maturity of the berries happened thanks to the concentration because the drying of the soils and the water loss due to the North wind have reduced volumes and increased the grape sugars. This beautiful harvest is the result of an "haute couture" work: expertise, patience, great work of observation and regular monitoring of the plots, careful selective picking of grapes at the winery with all the necessary human resources. The red wines are as the great classics of Burgundy with deep color, beautiful red and black fruits aromas, round and silky tannins as well as a rich acidity. The wines are structured, concentrated and complex, with great aromatic purity and a good potential of ageing. The white wines have a high acidity which emphasizes pure aromas of fresh fruit like the great vintages. The wines are clean and powerful, well balanced and therefore very promising.

Winery
The Domain from yesterday: The village of Vosne Romanee entered in the Burgundy history in 636. It was at the beginning of the 16th century that we first noted the name Mongeard in the registry. Since then and threw all the generations the family is committed to their passion : Vine and Wine. The Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, renamed since 1945, now operates, in the purist burgundy tradition, a large vineyard, from the Cote de Nuits to the Cote de Beaune, from Marsannay to the south of Dijon to Puligny-Montrachet, including all the most prestigious villages of the Cote : Gevrey-Chambertin, Vougeot, Nuits Saint Georges and Savigny les Beaune, the centre of the exploitation remaining in Vosne Romanee. To Today: Vincent Mongeard, the son of Jean, who is as passionate as is ancestors, is committed not only to maintain and improve the family patrimony, but also to expand it, when there is an opportunity, this to winden the variety of the Domaine. The property accounts today for approximately 33 hectares, spread on 35 different appellations producing white Burgundy and Puligny-Montrachet issued from the Chardonnay grape, but also essentially red wines issued from the Pinot Noir grape in the best climates (finages=vineyard area) of the Cote. The vineyard is located in the mid-slope. Southeast orientation on a chalk and clay soils. The Concept of the Terrior - Spring: Severe pruning at the end of the winter allows to improve vegetation and control of the productivity of the vine. The pruning constitue the essential factor to obtain quality : when practised by an experienced winegrower, this meticulous work remains manual. Numerous type of pruning exists, but the most widespread in Burgundy and the one we have retained, is known as the Guyot pruning. Each year we keep two branches, la baguette that will give productive branches and le courson, which will give the woods to be pruned in the following year. The severe debudding allows to regulate the crop, to improve the pruning and relieve strenght to the rootstock. Therefore, allowing better ventilation of the grape bunches and exposure to the sun, to favour the flowering which usually takes place in early June. Summer: The work continues in the vines in the months of June and July, it is during this period that we do the raising and the tying-down, which constitue of disposing of the vine branches and to fix the small branches between the steel wires. This work which requires meticulous and precise care, is to facilitate the passage of the tractors who are doing the treatments under the vigilant supervision of the person in charge of the crop and who will also judge of the frequencies of the treatments. The pre-green harvesting pratice by the property allows a better control of the quantities, qualities and maturity. Precise and meticulous, our winegrowers have to assess the strength of the rootstock and estimate the yield. It will determine the overall value of the crop. Worried of the quality, which remains our principal target, Vincent supervises personally the cultivating work and he will note hesitate at any time during the course of the year to get involve actively in the work. Autumn: It is the to most awaited moment : The Harvesting. The end result of a full year’s work. Period of joy for some, period of important responsabilities for others. The grapes of the highest quality are hand picked and are then brought to winery. This is where the talent of the winemaker comes in. A minimum yield exist for each appellation d’origine controlee. A reasonable yield seems to be around 30 hectoliters per hectare for the Grands Crus and 40 hectoliters per hectare for the Villages and 1ers Crus. The particularity of a moderate production remains for our Domaine the essential premise and the main factor of quality. Dedication: I thank you for allowing me through this site, to share this precious moment with you; I hope that you have found all the information that you were looking for. I am pleased that some of you have discovered my passion for Pinot Noir, that wonderful grape. For the others who already knew my wines, I trust they now better understand my full commitment to quality. I wish all of you as much pleasure in tasting my wines that I had in growing and making them. In Vino Veritas Vincent Mongeard.
