Blain-Gagnard Volnay 1er Cru Les Pitures - Volnay, Cote de Beaune, Bourgogne

Vintage: 2014 Region: France
Type: Reds
Winery: Domaine Blain-Gagnard
Tasting Notes:

"This is one of the finest white Burgundy estates, where the wine-making involves minimal interventions. It is run by Jean-Marc Blain and his wife Claudine, the daughter of Jacques Gagnard-Delagrange. The family owns some of the village’s greatest hillsides. New oak barrels are never used to excess, being subtly spread amongst the different cuvées, so that spicy oakiness is never perceptible here. Blain is also prudent with stirring-up of the lees (known as bâtonnage) which, if used to excess, may result in heavy wines which taste mealy.

Here, on the contrary, the finished wines have great purity of fruit, with balanced acidity and long, clean flavours which clearly evoke the wines’ precise origins. Here the nose is completely different with its broad range of spice and impressively complex aromas of super-fresh essence of dark cherry, pomegranate, violet and soft earth scents. There is both fine richness and intensity to the mineral-driven and well-delineated middle weight flavors that exhibit plenty of minerality on the moderately austere finale. This firmly structured effort is definitely not a charmer due to the youthful austerity and thus I would advise buying this only if you have the patience to cellar it for a minimum of 5 to 7 years first."

Like many growers in the villages of the Côte d'Or, Claudine Blain has the history and traditions of Burgundy in her veins: She is the daughter of Jacques and Josèphe Gagnard and the granddaughter of Edmond Delagrange, and her family maintains the well-established Gagnard-Delagrange property. Claudine and her husband, Jean-Marc Blain, manage the Blain-Gagnard estate.

Thirty-five percent of the estate's wine is sold to négociants. The rest of the white wine is put in Alliers oak (about one-third new) and bottled after 14-16 months in cask. The red wines use the same percentage of new oak but age in cask for 18 months before bottling. Blain believes in mixing wines from vines of different ages to capture the fruit of the younger vines as well as the richness of the older vines.
