Standish Wine Co The Schubert Theorem 2016 - Barossa Valley

Vintage: 2016 Region: South Australia
Type: Reds
Winery: Standish Wine Company
Tasting Notes:

100% Shiraz - Sourced from various sections of the Schubert Vineyard - Roennfeldt Road, Marananga. Planted on own roots between 1994 & 1999 (12ft x 8ft spacing). The soils are deep red/brown earths with eroded protrusions of crystalline quartz - ranging between 272-296m above sea level.

The Schubert Theorem lies within a branch of mathematics known as 'knot theory'. It states that any knot can be uniquely decomposed as the connected sum of prime knots. Aptly named, this wine deconstructs the Schubert family vineyard into its distinct sections, taking the finest elements of each, re-assembling to connect and enhance their strengths.

"From Roennfeldt Road, Marananga, one of the more famous addresses in the Barossa Valley.

It’s as black as a night with no moon in the Scottish Highlands, and I know this, because one night after quite a few whiskies I took it upon myself to go for a walk one cold winter’s night, and it took me quite some time to find my way back to the lodge… Anyway, I digress. Bold perfume of lavender and vanilla, sweet damp earth, blackberry and blueberry pie with toasted crust, liquorice and dark chocolate, perhaps some spice on that pie crust, too. Full bodied, but fresh and vibrant, with blackberry flavour and acidity, a deep well of ripe open-weave grainy tannin, depth and intensity, rippling tannin thunders on the earthy and toasty finish. It’s dark and charismatic. It’s long. There’s some polish and finesse, yet it still feels wild and unfettered. It does the Barossa Valley proud. Laugh and think (and drink), this is Australia." -

A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. Due to family upheaval this source is now gone but has been supplemented by various sites throughout the Barossa Region that he has identified as significant and unique.

All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk. As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label.

Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines.
