Domaine Tracot Beaujolais Villages

Vintage: 2017 Region: France
Type: Reds
Winery: Tracot
Tasting Notes:

"From some of the greatest restaurants in the world to the shelves of its finest wine merchants, the Gamays from Jean-Paul Dubost (pronounced `Dubo' locally) are extremely highly regarded. The speciality here is their Brouilly, which comes from 75 year old vines, but their Beaujolais-Villages is also exceptional; at least as good as most people's village crus. These are surprisingly rich wines with not inconsiderable tannins that reflect both Dubost's devotion to Gamay and also to quality.” - Berry Bros and Rudd

There is nothing quite as good as drinking an ‘artisan’ `Beaujolais’ slightly chilled in the warm Summer months. Produced from pinot’s cousin, Gamay, like many pinots, they are [generally] light to medium bodied, energetic, and making a serious comeback, no doubt due to a massive increase in quality in the region, and a focus from importers and wine lovers alike on smaller boutique producers. In anycase all the team were impressed when we tasted this wine last week, and instantly wanted to let everyone know about it.

The producer Jean Paul Dubost is a leader in the region and practices biodynamic viticulture as well as minimal intervention winemaking with only a little sulphur added at bottling for stability. This is ‘authentic’ Beaujolais, not 'lolly water’, as often seen in more mass produced ‘supermarket' examples of the style. You can taste the quality of the mid weight cherry/raspberry fruit, infused with a pleasing savouriness that gives it a real sense of seriousness. The tannins too are silky and fine but they gently grip adding shape and direction to the delicious primary fruit. This is real Beaujolais and excellent value! Good stuff!

This estate established in 1902, is managed by fourth generation vigneron Jean-Paul Dubost who took over from his father in 1993. Jean Paul is farming the 22 hectare estate organically and the noninterventionist philosophy is carried through to the winemaking. JP uses no chemicals and minimal sulphur. His view is that this allows him to produce wines that express the qualities of the gamay and the specific terroirs of his vineyards. He is extremely fortunate to have some ancient vines and this is reflected in the quality of all of his wines, not least the Beaujolais-Villages, which is as good as many of his neighbours’ Cru wines.
