Andrew Nielson - Featured in THE AUSTRALIAN | OCTOBER 11, 2014:
AUSTRALIAN winemakers have always looked to Europe for inspiration. Each label of Grange tells the story of how Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert hit on the idea for our most iconic wine while on a tour of Bordeaux in the early 1950s.

But for a new breed of Aussie winemakers, it’s not enough to learn from the old world — they want to be a part of it. And there’s nowhere more old world than Burgundy, home of France’s most highly prized (and highly priced) wines.

Sydney native Andrew Nielsen remembers he was working in advertising sales in Los Angeles when he first felt the calling. “I’d always been into wine, and then I had a bottle of Domaine Dujac which, as Dujac can do, changed my life. The next morning I said to my wife, ‘I’d like to become a winemaker,’ and she said ‘sure’,” he says.

A winemaking degree at Charles Sturt in Sydney followed, alongside practical experience at wineries in California, New Zealand and Coldstream Hills in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. There, founder James Halliday put him in touch with winemaker Simon Bize in Burgundy’s Savigny-les-Beaune region. Nielsen moved there in 2008.

“It was the perfect place because it really crystallised my ideas of small-lot winemaking from single vineyards. There are so many famous vineyards in Burgundy but also so many unknown ones that are just beautiful,” he says. Nielsen has set up his own label, Le Grappin, making pinot noir from premier cru vineyards in Boucherot and getting serious notice. British wine critic Tim Atkin rated his two Savigny wines as the best of the region for 2012, while his Beaune premier cru pinot noir was awarded 93 points.

“It’s the spiritual home of pinot noir and chardonnay — it’s the best place in the world if you’re going to make those wines, there’s no other place in the world where you can see such a sharp change in the wine just by moving 10m,” Nielsen says.

And while he may be trained in modern techniques, Nielsen says he takes a more traditional approach to winemaking than most of his neighbours.

“I think not being from there has allowed me to do things differently — I use an 82-year-old basket press and a combination of old and new ideas like cold maceration,” he says.

"A winemaker walked past the garage where I was making wine and saw the press and started laughing, and within half an hour every winemaker in town had walked past to have a look at what the crazy Australian was doing now. One guy who came past said he hadn’t seen anyone using a manual press like that since 1969.”

But while the French may laugh at his archaic methods, there has been none of the arrogance for which the old guard is sometimes known.

“I don’t think there’s any snobbery, in fact there’s probably more from Aussie winemakers who wonder who this guy is who thinks he can make French wine,” Nielsen says.
