Wine Maker Series Morialta Vineyard Pinot Noir - Norton Summit

Vintage: 2016 Region: South Australia
Type: Reds
Winery: Wine Experience
Tasting Notes:

The Winemaker Series was designed to champion a winemaker doing something we love and admire, terrior that is exceptional and a methodology that is both inspiring and artisan. Wines that speak of place, authenticity and people.

Vineyard : As usual for Whisson Lake, the grapes were grown by Magdalene Viticultural Consulting (our vineyard business), but most unusually, not on the Whisson Lake Vineyard.Instead, the grapes were grown on the famous old Morialta Vineyard at Norton Summit. This vineyard, which was planted by us in 1989 for the current owners and has been share farmed by us for several years now, has over the years been the part or complete source of grapes for wines such as Penfolds Yattarna, Grosset’s early Adelaide Hills Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs, Penfolds Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir and Cellar Reserve Merlot, and so on.

Viticulture The vineyard is run in line with standard Adelaide Hills high country vineyard practices- narrow rows, vertical shoot positioning, and hand pruning and picking, no soil cultivation, only organic inputs, and medium cropping levels.

Winemaking : The wine was made using standard Whisson Lake practices- that is to say, no fiddling!

Or to put it another way, more or less how winemaking was done in the better cellars in Burgundy before the advent of high tech oenology. That is; wild (ambient!) yeast, wild malo bugs, no pH adjustments, no added tannin, vitamins, colour, or anything else, no fining or filtering, no refrigeration, cold soaks pre and post fermentation, hot ferment (we insulate the fermenters and heat them if necessary).

From the picking bin the grapes go through the destemmer into a small open fermenter for the cold soak, then wild fermentation, and then further cold soaking. From the fermenter the wine goes through our little bag press into old oak (in this case 500L barrels) for malo and gradual settling for in this case 18 months. From the barrels the wine was racked into road tanks and taken to bottling, where it had its first and only sulphur addition just before bottling. From the bottling hall the bottles were brought back and put into low temperature storage until sale.
